Jason, I teach 7th/8th grade Reading at Hunter with Matt Wilson. We would like to create an informal list of literature that we cover at the Elementary and High School. We are also speaking with the 5th/6th grade teachers to get a better idea of material. Matt and I have noticed that some books are being taught in multiple grades and classrooms. Hopefully, a list will deter this duplication.
Some literature I cover: (Poe Unit) “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Raven,” “Alone,” and “Annabel Lee;” A Christmas Carol, The Outsiders, The Chocolate War, The Devil’s Arithmetic, A Year Down Yonder, The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins, Because of Winn-Dixie, Best Poems Ever (Shakespeare, William Carlos Williams, Sandburg, cummings, Plath, Frost, Langston Hughes).
As soon as Matt makes a list for me, I will e-mail it to you. If you could forward this message to your colleagues and discuss it with them, I would be very greatful. At your convenience, please send me a list of material you all cover at UHS (even if it is only taught on rotation every couple of years).
